Happy Mardi Gras!! Happy Carnival!!

 


Yes, I know. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, Carnival has been different this year all over the world.

However, many people have decided to keep its spirit alive. A good example of this is the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans. Mardi Gras" is French for “Fat Tuesday”.

Mardi Gras Day is February 16 this year. It is the last day of the Carnival season as it always falls the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent (= Cuaresma). While there will be no parades this year, there will be Mardi Gras house decoration (house floats) , special cocktails in bars and restaurants, king cakes and so much more.

Remembrance Day is on November 11th . This is a very special day because it marks the end of World War One in 1918 . The war officially ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – that means 11:00 a.m. on November 11th.  Every year British people come together to remember those who died in wars across the world. People wear red poppies on their clothes.The red poppy became a symbol of Remembrance Day because they grew on the battlefields.

                                                                       5 th November : Bonfire Night , a.k.a. Guy Fawkes Day. It is celebrated in the UK, and in other countries that were formerly part of the British empire, with f ireworks , parades and bonfires with ragdolls which are burnt on the fire. But, who was Guy Fawkes ?  Guy Fawkes was the man that tried and failed to kill the king  James Iand blow up the Houses of Parliament in the 16th century.
