Bonfire Night

 

5th November: Bonfire Night , a.k.a. Guy Fawkes Day, is celebrated in the UK, and in other countries that were formerly part of the British empire, with fireworks , parades and bonfires with ragdolls which are burnt on the fire.

But, who was Guy Fawkes ?Guy Fawkes was the man that tried and failed to kill  king James I and blow up the Houses of Parliament in the 16th century. It was called 'The Gunpowder Plot'.The mask is also connected with the online hacktivist movement Anonymous.

The nursery rhyme about the Gunpowder Plot can be heard in the movie 'V for Vendetta':

POPPY DAY

Remembrance Day is on November 11th . This is a very special day because it marks the end of World War One in 1918 . The war officially ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – that means 11:00 a.m. on November 11th.  Every year British people come together to remember those who died in wars across the world. People wear red poppies on their clothes.The red poppy became a symbol of Remembrance Day because they grew on the battlefields.
