Letras galegas

 

‘Día das letras galegas’ is a public holiday in Galicia celebrated every year on 17 May. It is a kind of tribute to Galician literature, language, and culture in general.

Each year it is dedicated to a personality who has played an important role in the promotion of Galician culture and language.

The date of this celebration ,17 May ,is no coincidence. It is the anniversary of the publication of ”Cantares Gallegos” (”Galician Poems”), Rosalia de Castro’s main work.

This year the day has been dedicated to the poet and violinist Luisa Villalta.


Xurxo Souto defined her as “Bach and old muiñeira. Absolute formal perfection, passion and popular smell. This synthesis is very difficult to achieve, but she did it".

POPPY DAY

Remembrance Day is on November 11th . This is a very special day because it marks the end of World War One in 1918 . The war officially ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – that means 11:00 a.m. on November 11th.  Every year British people come together to remember those who died in wars across the world. People wear red poppies on their clothes.The red poppy became a symbol of Remembrance Day because they grew on the battlefields.

                                                                       5 th November : Bonfire Night , a.k.a. Guy Fawkes Day. It is celebrated in the UK, and in other countries that were formerly part of the British empire, with f ireworks , parades and bonfires with ragdolls which are burnt on the fire. But, who was Guy Fawkes ?  Guy Fawkes was the man that tried and failed to kill the king  James Iand blow up the Houses of Parliament in the 16th century. Many years later, a comic and a movie called V for Vendetta used the image of Guy Fawkes.  The mask is also connected with the online hacktivist movement Anonymous, famous for i ts anti-establishment protests.                                   Watch th...
