Halloween

 


Halloween is celebrated each year on October 31st . It dates back to the Celtic festival of Samhain: the end of summer and harvest time (life) and the beginning of winter (death). The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, the boundary between the living and the dead was very thin, and so the dead could return to earth for a day.

More than a thousand years ago the Christian church named November 1 All Saints Day (also called All Hallows.) The night before All Hallows was called Hallows Eve. Later the name was changed to Halloween.

POPPY DAY

Remembrance Day is on November 11th . This is a very special day because it marks the end of World War One in 1918 . The war officially ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – that means 11:00 a.m. on November 11th.  Every year British people come together to remember those who died in wars across the world. People wear red poppies on their clothes.The red poppy became a symbol of Remembrance Day because they grew on the battlefields.
