Guy Fawkes

 





5th November: Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Day.

It is celebrated in the UK, and in other countries that were part of the British empire, with fireworks , parades and bonfires with ragdolls which are burnt on the fire.

But, who was Guy Fawkes ? Guy Fawkes was the man that tried and failed to kill the king James I and blow up the Houses of Parliament in the 16th century.

The mask is also connected with the online hacktivist movement Anonymous, famous fo its anti-establishment protests and V for Vendetta.











There is a poem linked to the fireworks and Bonfire Night:

Remember, remember, the 5th of November,

Gunpowder, treason and plot.

I see no reason

Why gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent

To blow up the King and the Parliament

Three score barrels of powder below

Poor old England to overthrow

By God's providence he was catch'd

With a dark lantern and burning match

Holler boys, holler boys, let the bells ring

Holler boys, holler boys

God save the King!
