17 May
The
‘Día das Letras Galegas’ is
a public holiday in Galicia
celebrated on
17 May to honour Galician literature and language.
The date marks the anniversary of the publication of Cantares
Gallegos
by Rosalía de Castro in 1863
In 2025, the celebration takes a special twist by dedicating the day not to a particular individual writer, but to the popular oral poetry and the ‘cantareiras’,women like Adolfina e Rosa Casás Rama, Eva Castiñeira, Prudencia e Asunción Garrido Ameijende e mais Manuela Lema Villar, “mulleres creadoras e transmisoras da poesía tradicional oral”.
“Polas cantareiras, polas pandereiteiras… pola poesía popular. “
And it leads to our days in which musical tradition and modern sounds can be combined . Just ask 'As Tanxugueiras'.
